RECIPE: Chunky Steak and Beer Pie

  • 500 gms mince (50% beer 50% lamb)
  • 200 gms fillet steak
  • 1 medium brown onion, finely chopped
  •  2 tbs Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1-2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 3 sheets frozen shortcrust pastry, partially thawed
  • 250 ml beef or vegetable stock
  • Salt and cracked pepper to taste
  • Splash of beer for a little extra flavor. Stout works well
  • 1 egg, whisked for brushing the pastry



Caramelize the onions. Add the fillet steak, brown a little. Add the Mince, cook till browned. Add garlic, sauces, stock, salt, pepper, beer. Add a sprinkle of flour to thicken the sauce. 1 egg for brushing the pastry.

Cook it all up, stir, stir, stir, bring to a quick boil, turn it down to a simmer and let it thicken up for 30-45mins.


Lightly grease 6 x 13cm round pie tins or ramekins or whatever pie dish you have. Cut lids and bases from the shortcrust pastry and press into your pie tins or whatever your using. Keep bases and lids covered and chilled in the fridge till ready to use.


Preheat oven to 200°C. Place a baking tray in oven. Fill pastry bases with meat mixture. Brush edges with water and top with pastry lids, pressing edges together using a fork to seal and trim excess.


Brush pie tops with egg and make a steam hole using the point of a knife. Place pies onto hot baking tray and bake for 25 minutes or until pastry is golden and puffed. Serve immediately.
